Lionel Messi moved clear of Cristiano Ronaldo during Argentina’s draw with Chile
Argentina’s meeting with Chile on Monday night proved a significant one for talisman Lionel Messi, in his long-standing personal battle with Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Albiceleste were back in action a little over 12 hours ago.
Lionel Scaloni’s men got their Copa America campaign underway, in a showdown with Chile at the Olympic Stadium.
Argentina headed into proceedings with revenge firmly on their minds, with Chile having of course broken the hearts of their heavyweight opponents not once, but twice, in Copa finale victories in both 2015 and 2016.
When all was said and done in Rio on Monday, however, Argentina, again, failed to get the job done.
The Albiceleste did open the evening’s scoring just past the half-hour mark, when Lionel Messi bent home a sumptuous trademark free-kick:
Chile, though, simply refused to be beaten, and eventually secured a share of the spoils early in the 2nd-half, through Eduardo Vargas.
Argentina now have it all to do, in a Group B table featuring the likes of Uruguay and Paraguay.
