Officially confirmed. Matthias Ginter has joined SC Freiburg on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund, after being approached by a number of European clubs.
Ginter progressed through the Freiburg youth system and made his club debut in 2012, at the age of 18.
He joined Borussia Dortmund in 2014 and made over 100 appearances for the club before joining Gladbach in 2017.
It was announced in December that the central defender would be leaving Die Fohlen when his current contract expires in June, with Bayern Munich and Inter Milan being linked with his signature.
But, almost a decade after making his debut, the 28-year-old is returning to Freiburg to play under Christian Streich.
“I wanted to do something very special in my career, and there is nothing more special for me than returning to this club and to my home,” Ginter told the official website of Freiburg.
“The development of the entire club, the potential of the team, and the unique way of communicating with club officials in the last few weeks – finding all of this in my home these days can be described as a stroke of luck.” This overall package was just right.”
The terms of his contract have not been revealed.
