Newcastle United signed excellent young midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon during the winter transfer window, and they now want one of his compatriots from the same club. According to The Times, former AC Milan offensive midfielder Lucas Paqueta has emerged as a prominent target for Eddie Howe’s Magpies.
The 24-year-old, who has a close relationship with Guimaraes, might cost Newcastle up to £50 million. If a deal to bring Paqueta to the north of England is finalised, the Saudi-owned club would most certainly smash their transfer record. Newcastle’s previous record signing was Joelinton, a fellow Brazilian who arrived from Hoffenheim in 2019 for £40 million.
With the aforementioned Joelinton now playing his finest game for the St James’ Park side as a left-sided box-to-box midfielder, Eddie Howe would establish an all-Brazilian midfield with the addition of Paqueta. Guimaraes would play at the bottom of a three-man midfield, with his teammates on either side of him.
The willingness of Lyon to split ways with Paqueta is an important component in Newcastle’s pursuit. It is reported that the French club is presently considering bids for fellow midfielder Houssem Aouar, who is available for as little as £13 million, so the club currently coached by Peter Bosz may choose to maintain Paqueta for the time being.
Newcastle are still looking for a new left-back after Matt Targett’s loan term at St. James’ Park expired. Another Brazilian, Atletico Madrid’s Renan Lodi, is said to be a top target. Links to West Ham striker Jarrod Bowen have also surfaced in the media in recent weeks.
